Moshe Feldenkrais said that he developed his group
technique, Awareness Through Movement® classes (ATMs),
“… to produce the effect of the manipulative teaching
(Functional Integration® sessions)
in the greatest number of people.”

Dr. Feldenkrais considered movement, learning, and transformation from a perspective which included extensive understanding of neuroscience, engineering, and physiology. His Awareness Through Movement® lessons teach individuals to become somatically aware of their habitual neuromuscular patterns. The lessons then offer options for new ways for their brains to organize those neurological patterns while increasing sensitivity and improving efficiency.

ATMs

An ATM class consists of precisely structured movement explorations guided by your teacher. You will become increasingly involved in sensing, moving, and imagining as each lesson evolves into movements of greater range and variety. Then, “whether you want it or not,”* the lessons gradually clarify the neurological relationships between the many parts of your body and your whole self. Over time you will learn how to sense more of your self as you move, and you’ll discover more and more efficient and comfortable ways of moving by using the support of your skeleton.

* Dr. Feldenkrais repeated to his students many times that, as they continued to use his Method, changes would come to their movements, contentment, perspective, and relationship with life whether they wanted them to change or not.
